6 Ways To Help ATC On Your Next IFR Flight

Here's how you can keep things running smoothly...

1) File well ahead of time

AIM 5-1-8 recommends that you should file an IFR flight plan no less then 30 minutes prior to your estimated time of departure. This helps you avoid delays by making sure your flight plan is in the system when you call for your clearance.

2) Minimize unnecessary radio calls

Be concise, and avoid long calls. When you think about what you're going to say before you key the mic, you'll keep your calls clear and concise.

3) Get ATIS Early

If you're in range, get ATIS information ahead of time. When center transfers you to approach control, you'll already have the current weather, and they won't have to spend time asking if you have it.

4) Think ahead

Look at the approaches for your destination airport before you leave the ground. If you know what available, and what the weather is doing, you'll be better prepared to brief and fly your approach.

5) Keep your speed up at busy airports

Keeping your speed up helps ATC with separation between smaller GA aircraft and larger turboprop/jet aircraft.
