Can You Pass This IFR Preflight Walk Around?

First things first...

  1. 1) You're going on an IFR flight. You check the aircraft logbook, and the last time the VOR was checked was on January 31st. Today is February 28th. Can the VOR be used for primary navigation on this flight?
    Boldmethod

91.171 specifies that for IFR flight using the VOR system for navigation, the VOR must have been check and found to be within the operable limits within the preceding 30 days.

  2. 2) The transponder inspection was completed today, February 28th, 2018. When is the next transponder inspection due?
    Boldmethod

According to 91.413, the transponder inspection must be completed within the preceding 24 calendar months. So the next transponder inspection would need to be done by the last day of February, 2020.

  3. 3) During preflight, you notice there isn't a magnetic deviation card near the compass. Is this a required placard?

According to 23.1547, a placard that shows the calibration of the instrument needs to be on or near the magnetic direction indicator at all times.

  4. 4) You sump the wings, and the fuel is a light straw (yellow) color. What grade of fuel is this?

Jet A is either clear or a light straw yellow color. It also means if you're flying an avgas piston aircraft, you've got the wrong fuel in the tanks.

  5. 5) You inspect the left landing gear and notice liquid dripping from the hydraulic line for the brakes. What color is it?
    Boldmethod

    Hydraulic fluid is red.

  6. 6) You check the aircraft lights and they're all operable, except the landing light. Because this flight is IFR, is the landing light required? (the flight isn't being operated for hire)
    Boldmethod

As long as the aircraft is not operated for hire, 91.205 doesn't require a landing light.
