The VFR Charts and Publications Course

Practice sessions allow you to quickly use what you learn, and are optimized to help you learn quickly - no matter how much time you have. End-of-chapter tests make sure you know how to use the publications, and make sure you're ready for your checkride.

A final test makes sure you're ready to go - whether it's for your private pilot checkride, a biennial flight review, or simply helping you keep up-to-speed.

Video: The Private Pilot Oral - VFR Charts and Publications

This 20 minute video simulates part of a private pilot checkride oral, covering the questions your examiner will ask on VFR charts and publications. In the video, we walk through a planned cross-country from Paine Field north of Seattle, Washington to Portland-Troutdale, Oregon. You'll hear the examiner ask questions on the airports and navaids along the route, as well as topographic features on the Seattle Terminal Area Chart and Sectional. You'll also hear questions covering the Airport/Facility Directory and NOTAMs, including temporary flight restrictions. It's a great way to learn what kinds of questions your examiner will ask on VFR charts and publications.

The NOTAMs Abbreviations App

No matter how much you study, you'll eventually run across contractions and abbreviations in NOTAMs that you don't know. This simple app lets you look up abbreviations on-the-fly. Like every other one of our apps, it works on-line and off, so you can use it in the airport during planning, or in the airplane when you're en-route.

Video: Rare Items on a VFR Sectional

The National Airspace System is full of rare airspace segments, unusual airports, and uncommon navaids that you'll only find in one or two places. While these items are rarely seen on a practical test, you may encounter them on a cross-country. This video covers rare finds submitted by pilots, as well as those we've found while digging through sectional charts. Who knows - maybe you'll see one of these on your next cross-country!
