10 Stats From Oshkosh, The Busiest Control Tower In The World

This is a really busy tower.

1) During the week of AirVenture, Oshkosh is the busiest tower in the world.

2) 64 controllers from around the US come to Oshkosh to work the show.

3) The controllers work in 4-person teams, forming 16 total teams.

4) All controllers wear pink shirts, visually separating them from other aircraft operations personnel at the airport.

5) Why pink? Because controller teams stand next to the runway during aircraft departures, and the color keeps them separated from the other flight line operations volunteers who wear orange.

6) ATC has reduced horizontal separation minimums during AirVenture of 1,500 feet between airplanes. Normally, separation minimums are 3,000 feet.

EAA

7) This allows controllers to land up to 3 aircraft at a time on a runway.

8) How is that done? There are different colored dots painted on each runway. Aircraft are cleared to land on a specific colored dot.

9) On Thursday alone, there were 3,153 aircraft movements (a takeoff or landing) at Oshkosh, which may be a single-day record for AirVenture.

10) So far, air traffic is up nearly 10% over last year at AirVenture, which makes an awesome show for everyone there.
