Last week, Cessna announced plans to build a diesel powered 172 Skyhawk using a Continental engine.

Over the past 10 years, several manufacturers have built diesel powered aircraft, with the Diamond Twin-Star being one of the most well know types. However, they haven't reached mainstream popularity yet.
