BoldMethod Helps Guide NTG and Its Customers Through Analog Cell-Phone Shutdown
January 16, 2008
BoldMethod is helping NTG, Inc. of Olathe, Kansas to transition its 5000+ fielded remote monitors that use old analog cellular technology (AMPS) to new digital GSM cellular technology. NTG manufactures electronic remote monitoring equipment for the oil and gas industry, and its legacy units in the field must be upgraded to digital cellular technology in order to continue working, as the AMPS network will begin shutting down on Feb. 18, 2008. The AMPS shutdown will affect most of NTG's oil and gas pipeline customers.
To prevent service interruptions to the critical oil and gas pipeline monitoring products that NTG's customers use, BoldMethod has worked closely with NTG to implement a smooth transition. NTG built an upgrade to their analog monitors so that they will communicate on the digital network, without requiring a complete unit replacement. BoldMethod built a software application that encapsulates the communication from the analog unit, transmits it across a digital network, and then correctly interprets the communication as it arrives at the NTG server.
When put together, the end result is a fully upgradeable pipeline monitoring system that will continue to work for years to come. This collaborative effort has saved NTG customers both time and money, and prevented a network outage.
